downloadOil changes are an important aspect of regular vehicle maintenance. This is one of the first things most drivers learn about car ownership. Without enough clean engine oil, your vehicle can sustain major damage very quickly.  Make sure you are aware of the best practices for your own vehicle, and practice them regularly to keep it running well.

Why is clean oil important?

Despite being one of the lower cost components on your car, oil plays a vital role in the performance and durability of your engine. It serves three different functions; keeping engine components working smoothly together by reducing friction, drawing away heat, and preventing buildup of residue and small particles. Over time oil picks up metal particles and dirt, which reduces its ability to lubricate and absorb heat. It gets darker, more viscous, and begins to looks sludgy. This can lead to worn out piston rings or cause your engine to require an expensive cleaning. If you run out of oil, the pistons can seize, and you will need to replace the whole engine. In addition to getting frequent changes, also check your oil occasionally to make sure it is not dirty or low.  If it looks dirty or is below the recommended fill line, don’t wait to resolve the issue.

How often should it be changed?

Many vehicles have a recommended time frame between oil changes of every 3,000 to 5,000 miles under normal driving conditions. Some vehicles are able to go longer between changes, and different fuel types can also affect the frequency of changes. Diesel engines can often go 5,000 miles or longer between oil changes without any issues. Stressful driving conditions, such as short trips, stop-and-go traffic, dusty roads, and towing, can make it necessary to change it more often. It is best to check your owner’s manual or talk to a repair shop to find out the best schedule for your own vehicle. No matter what, make sure you have a way to keep track of how many miles you have driven since you last oil change. Some repair shops put a handy sticker on your windshield to remind you when the next service is due. You can also set a trip meter to track miles, or keep a log of services in your glove box.
